The big news today was all about the 3Doodler campaign on Kickstarter. The 3Doodler is the first of its kind- a patent pending 3D Printing Pen. Yes, that’s right, a pen that “writes” in 3 dimensions utilizing 3D printing technology. The 3Doodler team from WobbleWorks has blown through their $30k funding goal and has raised over $300k in a single day!
As described on Kickstarter, “as 3Doodler draws, it extrudes heated plastic, which quickly cools and solidifies into a strong stable structure. This allows you to build an infinite variety of shapes and items with ease! Most people will instantly be able to trace objects on paper, and after only a few hours of practice you will be able to make far more intricate objects. 3Doodler is a brand new way of creating objects and artistic works. Whether you are an artist, hobbyist or 3D printing fanatic, we can’t wait to see what you 3Doodle!”
“There are many ways 3Doodler can be used. 3Doodles can be created as flat forms and peeled off a piece of paper, as freestyle 3D objects, or in separate parts, ready to be joined together using the 3Doodler. This is a product that you must see in action to fully understand. The video is terrific and the founders appear to be well suited to the task of bringing the 3Doodler to market. Due to the design where the pen tip gets quite hot, it’s not rated for kid use (12+ only), but the little ones are going to be all over this “toy”. The developers plan to make a kid friendly version soon.
The creative, simple brilliance of the 3Doodler takes 3D printing technology and re-invents a utilitarian (and dare I say outmoded device) into a fun, fresh tool that has the potential to create an entirely new product category. That’s why the 3Doodler is a perfect example of why I am so bullish on 3D printing.I am happy to say, I jumped on the bandwagon, and am eagerly awaiting my 3Doodler, which is expected in October, 2013.
